When watching Anthology, you just miss John. Sure some of his other interviews show up, but he doesn’t get a chance to talk at length about what the others do. It hurts especially badly during the Special Features Section. It just goes into the details of making Anthology, there’s footage of George, Paul, and Ringo sitting around playing music and reminiscing. They also show some behind-the-scenes footage of the Beatles “reunion” songs. It’s hard not to feel like John’s missing. Ringo even mentions how he personally needed to pretend that John was out for tea or the bathroom.
Now with George gone, it’s even more poignant to watch some of this stuff. It’s so easy to think that he’s still alive, and it hurts to remember that he’s not. It’s just hard to not feel like this is the end of a golden age. I’m not sure what the future holds for music, but if the Beatles are ever lost, it will be a sad day indeed.
I need to think about stuff that doesn’t depress me, like U2. I love these guys, and all their members are alive! They’re still together after 20 years! And they don’t suck!
